Junior Girl Scout Troop 84 Earns Bronze Award
Members
of Junior Girl Scout Troop 84 (Alexis, Arshawna,
Ashante, Courtney and Elizabeth) have earned the
Girl Scout Bronze Award!
After working 2
years on leadership awards and other badge
requirements, members of Junior Girl Scout Troop 84
spent over 92 hours planning and learning about the
value of knowing First Aid and the need for Safety.
On March 15,
2008, with the aid of volunteers, a 5 hour First Aid
and Safety Workshop for Brownies and Juniors was
held. Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts learned how to
recognize and avoid potentially harmful situations,
treat common injuries and respond to emergency
situations.
The girls asked
professionals in their career fields to volunteer to
lead stations, such as: Calling for help (dialing
911 and what to say); playground safety; how to give
first aid for fractures, sprains, head injuries and
fainting; what to do in breathing and choking
emergencies. The workshop showed them how to get
help, rescue breathing and conscious choking
response skills and first aid for burns, cuts,
scrapes and bites. The participants also learned
fire safety and awareness, develop escape plans and
poison prevention. The girls also had a large
"safety around the home game" recreated from the
Junior Handbook; a craft table and many posters all
around to help teach about First Aid and Safety.
The workshop was
a great success and ended with each participant
receiving a First Aid and Safety Awareness
Certification and two Junior Badges/ Brownie
Try-its. Volunteers were given Thank-you cards, but
even the members of Troop 84 stated that the cards
just did not seem like enough! The volunteers were
wonderful, making the project a great success.
